The Department of Biochemistry was started in the year 1995 with one faculty and strength of 45 students. From then onwards it has slowly and steadily picked up and presently it has strength of 500 students, with 9 faculty members on the board. More than 2000 students have secured their degree in Biochemistry since the inception of the department. The department is proud to speak about the students who achieved ranks in National level Examinations to mention a few like TIFR, HCU, JNU New Delhi, NCL Pune etc. The department is also credited with its students placed not only in National but also in international institutes like University of Maryland (Maryland); University of Ohio (Ohio), Texas State University (Texas), Kentucky State University etc pursuing research in various specializations of Biochemistry. The Motto of the department is to see that every student passes out with an Analytical approach towards the subject.
Aurora's Degree College is one of the very few colleges to have started an undergraduate course in Biotechnology in the state of Andhra Pradesh. It is a relatively new and fast-developing field that integrates knowledge from several traditional sciences: Biochemistry, Chemistry, Genetics, and Microbiology. For this reason, an initiative was taken to have faculty members from various disciplines in the department. Faculty members having specializations in Genetics, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Animal sciences & Microbiology integrating all the disciplines to teach Biotech curriculum, teach the curriculum. The Department rests on a strong system having an application-oriented approach utilizing the infrastructure to learn techniques as well as doing inhouse projects in the laboratory. The course is offered with Biochemistry and Chemistry, the two most important subjects vital to the understanding of Biotechnology.
The Department of Chemistry was established in 1993 with two faculty members and at present there are 8 faculty members in the department. The faculty endeavours to lay a strong foundation of concepts, in students minds has given fruitful results. The students are made aware of the latest emerging trends and practical applications. The department adopts the student interactive oriented type of teaching methodology. There are many students who have secured cent percent in chemistry. There are various students who brought laurels by securing university ranks and entered into reputed institution like NCI Pune, JNU, HCU, OU, NITS etc Many of the students are well placed and scattered all around the world.
The Department of Genetics came into existence when the college started faculty of life sciences along with Chemistry and Microbiology in 1993. The first batch of students passed out in 1996 with flying colours. Every year a good number of students from the department are pursuing post graduation through all India Biotechnology Entrance Examination and other entrance examination to Central Universities and other State Universities. Many students have pursued higher studies in universities all over the world especially in Connecticut, Georgia, Ohio, Illinois, Sweden Sheffield, West Minister, Leicester, Nottingham, Helsinki, New South Wales to name a few. The department has strong association and collaboration with International Crop Research Institute for Semi Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD), University of Hyderabad, Directorate of Rice Research, Mahyco Research Foundation, ShanthaBiotechnics Pvt. Ltd., Bharat Biotech International Pvt. Ltd. The department has collaboration with Gene Tech India Pvt Ltd, the first private Medical Diagnostic Company in India and Hyderabad Science Society and Kamineni Hospital for Summer Workshops in Human Genetics and Genetics and Molecular Techniques respectively.
Microbiology is a vital discipline for the development of life sciences. The Department was established in the year 1993 to offer microbiology as a subject at graduate level. The department has initiated the concept of projects at undergraduate level and every year we are continuing the projects for all threeyear students to inculcate research attitude. The lab is well equipped and we can proudly say that ours is one of the best labs in the twin cities. Every year a good number of students are pursuing higher studies in reputed universities. Adding feather to a cap our students have excelled in Ph.D. programs at national and inter national universities. We have tie ups with various industries and every year students are taken for an industrial visit.
Botany is the mother of all branches of life sciences. Botany in combination with other sciences makes the student comfortable in understanding the concept of life. At present Botany in combination with microbiology and chemistry is offered at the undergraduate level. With sound background of this subject, the student finds convenient and easy to identify the plants and source of natural products, their importance and applications in day-to-day life. In the present day scenario, Botany is the reply to all the odds of ecological disturbances. Plants are better absorbers of sound, heat and Carbon dioxide and play a significant role in controlling the ecological balance.
